This is the Dr. Thomas Hall office building at the Historical Society complex. It was built in 1847. The architectural style of this building with pillars under the portico and other ornaments are a replica of that of an ancient Greek temple.
In 1933 the Historic American Building Survey included Dr Hall’s office. Documentation is on file at Library of Congress. It is believed to be the first doctor’s office in Illinois.
Dr.Hall's office contains his instruments, medicines, & records. The interior has been left in tact just as it was the day Dr. Hall turned the key and walked out.
SCIHS has a large artifact collection of items brought with Stark County pioneers along with a collection of ag equipment used 1829-1900.
This is the beautiful stained glass window in the hall of the Victorian house at the Historical Society complex. The symbol means life and hope remain in the world. It also stands for war dead. Sylvester & Effie McKeighan built the home in 1900 and moved in with their three daughters in 1901. Among the special displays upstairs can be found the Civil War display. Late in their 1858 U.S. Senate campaign Stephen A.Douglas and Abraham Lincoln spoke to enthusiastic crowds in Toulon.
Besides the obvious, openings have several docents scattered throughout the museum complex giving you more information about their exhibit. Private tours have 1 maybe 2 volunteers leading the tour.
Open Saturdays, 10:00-2:00.
